SYMPTOMS

DEPRESSION

Depression is very common and affects many people throughout the country.

Depression can include a range of both emotional and physical symptoms:
  • Emotional symptoms can include amongst others - a loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy, a general constant low mood, tearful, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating and trouble sleeping.
  • Physical symptoms can include but are not limited to - weight loss or weight gain, back pain, headaches and sexual dysfunction.
In the most serious cases of depression individuals can experience thoughts of worthlessness, death and suicide.

ANXIETY

Everybody will experience feelings of anxiety during the course of their lifetime. Feeling nervous and uneasy are very natural emotions to experience in certain situations – for example, starting a new job, taking your driving test or visiting the dentist.

However in some people these feelings can be so overwhelming and persistent that they impact greatly on their everyday lives. Many people with acute anxiety find everyday tasks such as travelling on public transport or doing the weekly shopping very difficult.

Anxiety can also include constantly worrying about things in general for no specific reason.

As well as the emotional symptoms you can also experience physical symptoms which can include amongst others - struggling to sleep, lack of concentration, headache and feeling sick.
If you feel you may be experiencing symptoms of depression/anxiety, please contact your GP for support and advice.
